im going to say hes pulling to much current and either his wire or altenator can't support it causing the voltage to drop below the amplifiers operational range..

if underpowering speakers is bad, then turning down the music would destroy speakers wouldn't it? it is better to underpower than overpower by my understanding. check the bass boost and see if that is on, if it is turn it off and see if the sub plays the whole time.

    ok ill explain
under powering with to small of an amp makes eveybody want to turn it up so it is loud. If the amp is two small(underpowering) then it will start to clip before it gets to the volume you want. Clipping causes the speakers to burn their voice coils. If you get a large enough amp you will be able to hear it where you want and the amp wont clip.

You can over power but many more people underpower

NOT ALWAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! prime example, i have a couple year old eclipse 10" sub in a huge fukkin powted box with a jl 12W4 as a passive ratiator. It slams for what it is, and it also gets relatively loud, pops a lil easily but its on the bridged channel of my 400sx amp which does 300 rmsx1 so.....................

    ps its also 150 rms

I would guess that it's one of two problems...like LBX said it could have an output regulator and therefore it cuts off (mine does that same thing)....or it could just not be getting enough current to make the power it wants. I have a buddy that had an amp doing the same thing, and he just straped a 200A fuse in place of his 60A, and it cured the problem
