HU has 3 RCA outputs, EQ only has 1 input? Please read

My HU has 3 sets of RCA outputs. Front, rear and sub. 4 volt if it matters.

I have a Kenwood 4042A EQ that I want to hook up but it only has 1 set of inputs and 3 sets of outputs. Front, rear and sub.

From my HU could I take the front set and use a Y adapter to bring it to one channel and do the same with the sub out and then hook it to the EQ? I would be bringing in the front on one channel and the sub on the other. Would there be any adverse effects? Would the EQ be able to split them back up? I want to be able to use the EQ for my highes/mids and still be able to use the xover for the bass for my subs. So would this work?

What if I just went with the front out of the HU only? Would that work just as good?

Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    AJ

I'd say get a better EQ. Even my crappy *** UNIC crossover has 2 inputs. Front and Rear and then 3 outputs Front, rear, and sub. I'd say either skip the EQ or get a better one.

I think I got the same EQ kenwood KGC-4042. Its a very old model I got mine from my brother, he use to have it in one of his cars. I haven't installed it yet I tried it to see if it worked and it made a nice differnce. I'm just going to hook it up to my front speakers. They are the most important and I wanna keep my head unit controls for everything else.

I was thinking. If my HU has 3 outputs. front, rear, sub. Wouldn't the front and rear be full range? If so I sould be able to use one of those sets (front or rear) as in put to the EQ. And since the EQ has 3 outputs. Front, rear, sub the EQ would do all the work instead of the HU. The only thing I would be losing is the bass boost from the HU. But since I would be able to do that with the EQ it would basically be a lateral move right? No lose no gain.

your also going to loose your ability to fade if you do that (front to rear) unless the eq has two sets of outputs and has fade controls--personally i would say dont use it, or use it for the fronts only.

i would say get a better EQ. however if you are strapped for monbey and really want your EQ hooked up just take the rear output from your h/u and hook that one to the input. in most cases the front outputs lack power for external sources such as EQs. if you use the rear output it will supply efficient voltage to run all you need.

Well, that's only true if the pre-outs have different voltages. Most head units don't, unless they have a dedicated subwoofer pre-out(like my alpine) that has a different rating. Most head units will have the same voltage for all the pre-outs. One thing that could affect the signal is if you have the head unit faded to the front or back. That could change the strength of the signal.
