kicker kx2500.1 going in and out of protect

this is part of my 18" subwoofer thread but i figured i would post up the question here since this would get more answers (amplifier and electrical questions in a subwoofer section doesn't work too good)

ok heres the issue. i got a used kx2500.1 rated at 2960w rms @ 2 ohms. my electrical is as follows

    200a HO alt
    big 3 with 1/0
    everstart maxx 875cca / 750ca battery
    1/0 wiring for the system

my problem is this. i have read from many many people that this amp will run @ 1 ohm daily. so i purchased 2 dual 1 ohm bl's wired down to 1 ohm (they sit at 1 ohm, even though fi said they were supposedly .7 ohm). i can listen to music all day long with moderate power levels. my eclipse is set to max out at 65, and i can listen to it at about 60 and still have the amp play. as soon as i go up, the amp cuts in and out of protect very quickly.

i checked my wiring and i have no voltage drops in the line at all. playing the subs to where they max out (before the amp cuts out) i have barley any voltage drops @ the battery (my 20.1 handled pulled more current but never shut off). all my wiring checks out, both sub load, and power and ground wires.

anyone have any idea what could be going on? is the amp just faulty? or am i missing something.

Manufacturer is not guaranteeing it to be stable at 1 ohm. Most of them are. Protection circuit which is monitoring load level can be tuned very different from amp to amp while complying with factory specs. I guess there is nothing wrong with your amp, it's just unlucky case of protection circuit kicking a bit earlier.

Re: kicker kx2500.1 going in and out of protect

well this is what im not understanding though. even wired @ 1 ohm, the amp is never going to see a 1 ohm load anyways due to box rise, so why would the protection kick in if its at least at the rated stability impedance?

Re: kicker kx2500.1 going in and out of protect

Specs just tells that it's stable on 2 ohms, if 1.99 ohms will trigger protection, that's perfectly fine for this amp. It's like CPU's for PC's, some of them overclocks easy, some of them are not stable doing this.
It would be interesting to see whether this amp goes into protection on 2 or even 4 ohms, as the problem can be in pre-amp stage.

i really wish i had a ammeter right now. i guess i could use my dmm to get a value for amps and volts and solve for resistance but im afraid id pop my dmm's fuse.

i really dont want to take my subs out and rewire since the screws always seem to strip out the mdf the second time around

When checking for resistance touch the leads of your DMM together and that will show how much your meter is off.

Have you checked the voltage at the amp when you play?

for the resistance i was talking about getting a amp and volt value on test tones to see how high of an impedance rise im getting, so that i know the issue isnt too low of a load causing the protect to kick in. a little miscommunication on my part, sorry

voltage at the amp: you mean voltage at the amp when its powered on, or when its actually playing music (or test tones)? i think i see where your going with this . will try it today

i will grab a ammeter this weekend and see what resistance the protect kicks in. i have a feeling with box rise i will be well above the 2 ohms rated stability

Are they really that efficent? Also when u set the gain, what rms were u aiming for.

They're efficient, but I figure that he should still get voltage drops considering that I do with mine. At 1 ohm that amp will **** more current and a 200a alt shouldn't be able to supply it with the current it needs when ran hard.
