    Looking for the right amp for my Infinity 12" sub

    First time poster but I lurked through here for awhile to get an idea of what I wanted to get for the interior of my car.

    Anyway, I have a small 1995 Nissan 200SX. I just put 4 new speakers, 2 tweeters, an amp to power it all and a new head unit.

    Yesterday through a trade of sorts, I picked up an Infinity 1252W 12" Subwoofer with the following specs:
    # SPECIFICATIONS

    * Diameter : 12" (300mm)
    * Sensitivity : 93 dB @ 2.83V/1m
    * RMS Power Handling : 300W
    * MAX Power Handling : 1200W
    * Frequency Response : 23Hz - 400Hz
    * Nominal Impedance : 2 or 8 Ohm
    * Voice Coil Diameter : 2" (51mm)
    * Mounting Depth : 5-1/16" (129mm)
    * Overall Diameter : 12-7/16" (316mm)
    * Cutout Diameter : 11-3/16" (284mm)

    The trade also included an Infinity Reference Series 7520a Amp plus all the cables.

    Amplifier Type Dual Channel
    Bridgeable Bridgeable
    RMS Power at 4 Ohms 97 W x 2
    RMS Power at 2 Ohms 142 W x 2
    Frequency Response 10 Hz - 69000 Hz
    Signal to Noise Ratio 83 dB

    ---

    My knowledge is fairly limited, but if it's bridgeable, that means I can put it into 1 channel (only 1 sub) at 284 W RMS) -- which is close to the 300 W RMS of the sub, right?

    If that works, is that even strong enough to utilize the sub? If not, a few suggestions for at least of the proper specs would be super helpful. Thanks guys!

    No, you can not bridge that amp and drive a DVC 4 Ohms sub (unless you wire it to 8 Ohms, but that would be a waste).

    Look into a Kicker ZX series or KX series 300.1 or 400.1 amp. There's tons all over the net and eBay.

    So if I used that amp and wired it at 2 ohms it would only utilize half the subs power?

    I don't really use my credit card for large purchases...most of my disposable income is in cash so I'm going to try and look around for a good deal on one of the ones you mentioned.

    1.) No. The sub is a dual voice coil model and each voice coil is 4 ohms. Both voice coils need to be utilized to get the most performance out of the sub. Wiring the sub at 2 Ohms means you wire both 4 Ohm voice coils in parallel then wire it to the amp. The amp will make a stated amount of power at 2 Ohms, often which is more than at 4 Ohms.

    Your 2 channel Infinity amp is bridgable to a single channel, but it's only stable at 4 Ohms when bridged, not 2, which is what your sub will load it at.

    2.) You can use PayPal for a variety of internet retailers if that would make you more comfortable than using a CC online.

    Re: Looking for the right amp for my Infinity 12" sub

    Thanks a ton for your help. I'm beginning to understand.

    So if I wire this amp to the sub, it will be outputting x2 into the 4ohm voice coils at 142 W. So it will only use about half of the peak RMS on the sub.

    And I have a paypal account and regularly use my CC online....it's just that the CC is maxed out. All my money is in cash due to my profession. I don't like depositing it but it might be worth it to spend the $200 to get an amp to push the sub, even though the sub isn't amazing or anything.

    What about this?
    --Alpine V-Power 400W Class D Bridgeable Mono MOSFET Amplifier with Adjustable Crossover

    600W peak output @ 4 ohms, bridged

    400W RMS (continuous) x 1 @ 2 ohms, 14.4V, 20Hz - 20kHz, 1% THD

    220W RMS (continuous) x 1 @ 4 ohms, 14.4V, 20Hz - 20kHz, 1% THD

    -- That's $200 at best buy, my buddy can install it and the guy I traded with gave me all the cables (hopefully the same needed for this one)

    It seems pretty comparable to the Kicker you mentioned (which I can't find in local stores). If it will be a solid difference from the amp I got with it, $200 is completely worth it.

    EDIT: The sub I got was already in a vented box but we took it out last night and checked the back of it. It said 300W RMS, 1200W peak and I thought the model number was 1252...but the front cone of the amp looks like the Infinity Perfect ones (tan with only a white infinity going across the middle). I couldn't find anything in the Perfect series from Infinity that had those same numbers. Unless someone changed the cone on it?

    For 50 bucks more I would purchase this

    Great amps and whenever you go to upgrade or sell your amp you will have a amp that can put out alot of power.

    Running this at 2 ohms will give you 900 watts RMS,, You can set the gains for it to push about 300 watts to your sub or you could always buy another sub if ur wanting more bass and this amp would be able to feed it the power they want.

    ^ good advice. SonicElectronix (even though it's listed cheaper, shipping is $16 to where I live) will sell it even cheaper after shipping is factored in.

    Side note: Hifonics amps are a little overrated, but are around the same delta as Profile.
