what test tone to use for setting gain?

Does everyone use a 50 hz tone or does it even matter as long as its in the subwoofers range? And what tone do you use for setting the gain on your mids and highs amp?

50hz tone usually 0dB reference but -3 or -6dB tones are more ideal for music applications (daily)

iirc you use a 1khz tone for setting your component amp

So if i used this CD http://www.crutchfield.com/S-FrZmbpZ...i=503CD104#Tab
    Would i use 50 hz at 0db or 40 hz at -5db?

    Either/or

The -5db tone would give you more output from the amplifier, resulting in more power being applied to the subwoofer with music.

Re: what test tone to use for setting gain?

i used 0db 50 hz for subs and 0db 1khz for comps. Worked great for me.

I found out that I needed quite a bit more gain to reach optimal power than how it had been set when I did it by ear.
