Eclipse Subs and Amp: Best Buy henchmen claims they suck

A bit of background info you may or may not care about: I've been saving my pennies for 3 years to completely eclipse out my car, at the advice of several of my friends who spend waaaay too much of their income on their car audio, so I trust their advice. I know its not the most cost-effective or bang-for-my-buck, but to me there's something reassuring about all the parts being made by the same company (I'm a mac guy, maybe thats why?).

Anyways, to get to the point, I have already purchased the front and rear speakers, the amp for them, and the head unit. All that is left is the subwoofers and sub amp. I listen to a lot of high bpm music, so I am sure that I want two 10" subs. I was planning on getting two SW7000 subs, and was unsure about the amp, but was looking at the XA4000 amp. The sub is dual voice coil, and runs at 4 ohms with 450W RMS, and the amp says it can run 350W x 2 bridged at 4 ohms. Will this work?

I asked the tech guys at Best Buy and he spent 15 minutes explaining how Eclipse is a shady business who doesn't test their products and you can't trust any of their numbers, and basically made eclipse out to be the worst product at the highest price. I really don't think thats true. But he did say that that 350W x 2 is the equivelent of the "peak" power the amp could give the subs, and that the more realistic RMS equivelent would be half that, 175W per sub. Obviosly that is waay underpowing my subs, but I'm not sure if I can trust that guy because he was so vehemently anti-eclipse.

    Any comments, advice, thoughts?

Get a class d amp. It'll most likely be mono & ignore the best buy guy, he has no clue what he's talking about.

check ebay for eclipse class d amps
I can build boxes in the ohio area, pm if interested.

I would tell you that there is pretty much no basis to what you were told. In fact, I know people at Fujitsu-Ten in their R&D department who do testing on a very regular basis.

I don't like the anti-Best Buy bandwagon but the guy you spoke with is just way, way off.

If the equipment is accurate, it will sound like the original performance. And objective testing is a fine tool for determining accuracy.

Subjective taste is, of course, another matter. Some prefer distortion, and a variety of colorations from the equipment

But I save my emotional pleasure for the artist's performance, not the equipment through which it's reproduced

i don't take what people at shops at face value hardly let alone the punks at stores like best buy...

lets not kid ourselves... I asked a guy who worked there one time about a pair of subs for my brothers first system...(my bro wanted to go look ) and i asked him the power handling... apparently the alpine type s was a 1500w daily sub and that it could take more

Okay, thanks everybody for confirming my suspicion that that fellow was crazy.

Now, on to my specific question. Is the amp I showed, the XA400, (which IS a class D amp) powerful enough for those 10" subs?

No, those subs will not be able to be run off of that amp. Dual 4 ohm subs can either be wired to a 2 ohm load or an 8 ohm load.

and two dual 4 ohm subs can be wired to 1 ohm or 4 ohm ... reading is fundamental
but that amp will only work in the 4 ohm config so you will need a different amp but not for the reason stated above.
thats my problem with eclipse amps not enough juice
but the xa 1000x2 would work but the site isnt clear on the 2 ohm rating for it not sure if its max or rms

It's a 4 channel amp; I don't think he intended to run 4 of them and he also implied that he thought they were getting a full 350 watts. Reading is fundamental.

A good rule of thumb I've always used: If Best buy/ Circuit city sells it...ITS junk. Cheap, massed produced shyt for those on a budget.

What you've done is what I've always done...save, save save. Save, be patient and get the good stuff.

Fracking guy has no clue what he's talkin bout. Eclipse is no good...please. Is it because it doesn't have fancy lit up displays and is eye candy for chicks?

Eclipse is about serious sound, for the guy that doesn't give a crap except for how well his music is gonna sound.

I rank them as my #1 head unit tied with Alpine, followed closely by Premier. (Not Pioneer, but Premier by Pioneer)

true enough thats why i said it wont work and offered another option by eclipse.
but the fact remains 2 d4 subs give more wiring options than just 2 or 8 ohm wiring they can also be wired to 1 or 4 ohms also , helping the op understand his wiring options.
