I got word back from the Alpine repair facility that has my deck. The quote is "only" ~$155 to repair the transport/cd mechanism in the 7878. Not bad for an $800 rare unit with scarce parts and a very unique transport. But, that makes this thing about $1000 I've spent on it (total), after tax (ugh). Worth it in my book though.
Anyone want a perfectly new Eclipse CD8445 when I get the Alpine back in a couple weeks? Paid full retail at authorized dealer on that thing too.
Got a link to the 7878?

And now for a completely random nJizm13 slogan...
Sure thing. It's a few years old. I think they only ran it in production for less than a year and decided to end production because of manufacturing costs:sell ratio (very small market for true high end). I had a hell of a time getting mine in the summer of 2002 (I think that's the right date). Best I can tell, the new F#1 status is it's replacement at $2500, sporting the same unique CD transport and high-strength single-beam laser pickup.
There's some stuff on the Web @ a Google search.
Here are a couple:

I see them pop up on eBay some times. Not often though, and most of those have the same failed transport.
god dammit, each day more i become more curious to hear one of these... im sure i would fall in love with it at first but i doubt there's even 1 in my country lol

I'm one. I absolutely hated the 8454 I used. I think they fixed some of the issues with the newer decks, but not enough.Originally Posted by audiolife
