    calculating cone area

i have seen people do this little thing on the forum..... 8+8+8+8=32
but i know that isnt real cone area. cone area is 3.14 x radius squared?
that is what i was told. and if thats true then the addition method is WAY off. because 8x4=32 which is about double to cone area of a 15". done the other way they are about equal.

    Re: calculating cone area

    yes i mean subwoofer

but if its truely proportional then they would be close, but if you do the fomula i was told its not even remotely close.

    8x4=36
15x1=15 so 4 8" woofers should have almost double cone area of 1 15"

but if done the other way it comes out like 200 and 175 or something like that meaning it is very close

    Re: calculating cone area

so this pretty much totally disproves the addition idea.

Doing it the addition way is not giving the area. Just the width across the sub multiplied by however many subs you have.

I have a question on this chart though....Not all subs of the same size have the same cone area do they?

well all subs arent exactly the same but most are very similar. i assume that is using a diameter of an 8" 12" and 15"

    Re: calculating cone area

So this chart is just a generalization. Cause the difference in cone area on different subs of the same size would be very small?

generally yes, but then there's also the square subs out there also so that chart is not 100% correct. But it's better than adding subs

    Re: calculating cone area

Sd is what you should look for when trying to find cone area.

That chart just does pi*r^2 which is NOT actual cone area.
